Loss is a force of nature.
Healing is the long trail home.

There is great beauty in nature. Great challenge. Great power. And, sometimes, great loss.

Bright Shadow is a Western NC based non-profit dedicated to providing resources, support, and community to those navigating just these kinds of losses—to and of the natural world.

How We Work

WNC Bedrock Initiative

Bright Shadow launched our WNC Bedrock Initiative to support the rocks of our community—the people and organizations who have held everything together, during and after Hurricane Helene, and who are still carrying the weight long after the headlines have faded.

Focusing on first responders, public service workers, and nonprofit leaders on an organizational level—and sponsored by grant funding and donor generosity—our WNC Bedrock Workshops create protected, peer-supported spaces where essential community servants can journey towards processing what they have been holding.

Some of us have lost friends, partners, siblings, or children to the river, mountains, or ocean.

Others have survived natural disasters and are grappling with what they witnessed, what was lost, or who didn’t make it through.

Whether we are adventurers or those left behind, friends, family or first responders, what joins us is our shared humanity…

…and our relationship to the natural world—how we move through it, how it moves through us, and how, even in loss, it can offer a path toward connection and healing.

Our offerings integrate shared story, somatic practice, outdoor play, and ceremony. We welcome all parts of self – light and shadow – exploring connection through collective grief and expanding our capacity for love, purpose, and awe.

Headwaters Retreat

A three day immersion into the expansive aspects of grief and loss, equally into joy and awe. This flagship offering is for folks who have lost a loved one to an outdoor pursuit and are ready to open to holistic healing. A blend of outdoor movement, somatic practices, shared story, optional individual counseling, ceremony, and community building in nature, join us for a breakthrough weekend.

Community

Bright Shadow is a co-created endeavor. We welcome and appreciate the diversity of human experiences to help us learn from one another and foster a community oriented approach to healing. We invite you to follow along through social media and blog posts, and also reach out to share your own insights, learnings, and gifts to this ever growing community.
